Quote for the Day

Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty.

Those values are so vague they could be spoken by any leader. And ironic, that it was spoken by a Democrat.

Nice post Erin, but what is its point, other than being a nice statement from the Kennedy speech of 20 January 1961?

I'll start a conversation by deconstructing it:

One might say that Kennedy typifies American resolve, but I'd say he more typifies American rhetoric. What is clear is that Kennedy's statement is double-edged: on the one hand if you are an allied nation with the United States you can feel safe that they are determined and will stop at nothing to achieve their ends. On the other hand, this speech could well serve a 2006 President Bush in Iraq:

"Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty IN IRAQ"

We should strive to be pacifists.

"Pacifism is the opposition to war or violence as a means of settling disputes. Pacifism covers a spectrum of views ranging from the belief that international disputes can and should be peacefully resolved, to absolute opposition to the use of violence, or even force, under any circumstances."

Pacifism works when opposing oppressive colonial regimes like Ghandi did in India where the ruling party is an oligarchy. But how does pacifism work against Al Qaeda?
