Clearing the Record

I've had a flood of response to my column this week, many agreeing with the need to inject some truth into the discussion.

Some, however, rightly took me to task for not discussing class sizes of Grades 4-12.

But, in doing so, some claimed that there is no cap for the older grades.

Complete rubbish.

There is cap - a district wide cap on Grades 4-12 of 30 students. Some classes are going to have more, that's true, but the averages allow for school boards to be flexible to putting together classes.

Could it be lower? Absolutely - and that's the direction in which this government is heading.

But, Vince Ready's recommendations did not include putting class sizes back in the collective agreement - because he knows that is simply the wrong place for them.

Interested in seeing how union handles this over the weekend - and how they end up dealing with their leadership who got them into this mess...

Interest post here. Much of the public don't realize this-regarding 30 students in class rooms generally from the 4th grade to 12th grade. Unions often twist the truth to the public.

This obsession with class sizes from the BCTF simply isn't borne out by the numbers. The latest studies have shown no correlation between class size and student achievement.
